Responding to a two-club opening
Note: A two-diamond response to a two-club opening is a "holding bid". It is an artificial diamond bid and is the most common response.
If your partner opens with two clubs and you have:
- At least eight HCP, AND
- A strong 5+ card suit with at least two of the top three honors,
bid the suit at the cheapest level.
Opening partner, take note:
- If your partner responds with a suit, you have a combined point count of at least thirty points. Consider jumping to four clubs to initiate the Gerber convention.
- A two diamond response does not necessarily mean that your partner has a weak hand; she might have ten points but does not have a five card suit.
Openers Second Bid
- With balanced hand and no five-card suit, bid two NT.
- With an unbalanced hand, bid best and longest suit.
