Takeout Double
The following is based on Chapter Four of '25 Bridge Conventions You Should Know'.
There are several instances of using a double that is not a penalty double; the Takeout Double is one such instance.
The convention is active when:
- Bidding is below game level.
- Doubler's partner has not made a bid other than to pass.
- The opponents have bid a suit.
Requirements are:
- The doubler has an opening hand, and
- At least three cards and at least a jack in the unbid suits, and
- Has no more than two cards in the opener's suit.
In this environment, the double is forcing for one round, even if the doubler's partner has zero points.
The responding partner has three options:
- With 0-8 points, bid the best suit at the cheapest level.
- With 9-11 points, bid the best suit but skip a level.
- With 12+ points, force bidding to game.
More will be added to this page later, including responding in no-trump.
